Jefferson County Water and Sewer added to OEPA public drinking water advisory list

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Jefferson County Water and Sewer District J is the latest municipal water facility in Ohio to be added to the state's public drinking water advisory list. The "sensitive populations" advisory issued in September 2024 for Jefferson County, District J facility serving 251-1000 persons from a purchased groundwater source came about when lab test results showed disinfection by-product trihalomethane at levels exceeding the established SDWA maximum.

Trihalomethane is one of a group of toxic by-product substances created when organic particles in raw water encounter products used in the disinfection process. A recent article "Chloronitramide anion is a decomposition product of inorganic chloramines" by Fairey et el, published in Science (Nov 21, 2024 Science, Vol 386 Issue 6724, pp 882-887) at last identifies what has to this point been an unknown substance. According to the researchers, the contaminant of concern has been isolated and identified as "chloronitramide anion". This substance has been detected in US drinking water samples where chloroamines are used for disinfection, potentially impacting over 100 million people in the USA. Following more study by the EPA and collection of samples across the USA, we may see this new contaminant added to the by-products of disinfection rule in the future. More to follow.
