NWS: Elevated fire danger

Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 937 am Sun Nov 3 by NWS Cleveland>br> Minimum relative humidity values of 25 to 35 percent and sustained winds of 8 to 14 MPH with peak gusts of 15 to 20 MPH are expected this afternoon. While 10-hour fuel moisture is above fire weather criteria, the low humidity, breeze, and dry fine fuels such as dropped leaves and dormant fields could contribute to the spread of any brush or field fires that start this afternoon and early evening.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Lucas County: City of Toledo issued a BWA Friday for water customers connecting along a stretch of Secor Road in west Toledo. According to published sources, a leaking water line on private property is the source of the drop in pressure and potential vector for microbiological contamination. City of Toledo recommends area residents allow the water to run from the cold taps to flush the line, then boil for three minutes to sanitize the water intended for consumption or oral hygiene. This morning, City of Toledo staff advised WTOH the boil order has been extended, now set to expire November 5 at 5 pm. The advisory was initially expected to expire yesterday, Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. EDT. WTOH has reached out to the private property manager for a statement. More to follow.

Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitors in Ohio
Sunny with a high of 65 today in the Cleveland area, a good bit warmer than yesterday. Mostly sunny, 71 degree for Wilmington area today. Seven monitoring stations record extreme low flows Saturday, these are found in Muskingum River basin and Ohio minor tributaries of the southeast.

Streams and rivers are still flowing much below seasonal normal Sunday, the same four locations posting record low water levels for this time of year. In the northeast, Grand River watershed has snapped back from the extreme drought rating given yesterday to a severe hydrologic drought today. Scioto River basin's Tygarts Creek watershed goes the other way, accelerating from moderate to severe drought overnight. A positive movement on the drought map, Huron-Vermilion Rivers watershed in the central Lake Erie basin has taken a break from the drought map overnight, currently unrated, matching adjacent Black-Rocky Rivers watershed which has managed to avoid drought all this time. All other watersheds remain as reported yesterday. See Saturday's report of drought rated watersheds, here.

WT HAB Tracker
from the satellite monitoring program of the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science(NCCOS)

A beautiful clear image of Lake Erie west basin snapped by Copernicus-Sentinel III satellite Nov 2 at low wind speed 3.4 mph shows a lake with minor localized HAB activity along shorelines. A few open water mats appear in Sandusky Bay and to the east, these are low concentration, 100 thousand cells per ml or less. Four previous days of extreme high winds may have buried the HABs far below the surface, it may take some time for the material to reach the surface again. More to follow here tomorrow. The last extensive HAB activity noted was from the Oct 28 picture, taken at a wind speed 5.4, about 25% over the 4 mph threshhold for a reliable assessment of HAB extent. Here we saw Sandusky Bay HAB with partially dispersed widespread HABs in the inner and outer bay area both east and west of OH 269 at the concentration 300 to 400 thousand cells per ml. A band of dispersed HABs was seen outside Sandusky Bay stretching east to Vermilion-on-the-Lake, encircling Kelleys Island with low concentration HABs, 100 thousand cells per ml or less.

NWS Cleveland calling for Snow Observers
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland is looking for new volunteers to measure snow in the Snow Observation Program. If you are already in the program, you do not need to re-apply.

New snow observers are needed in all of the counties that NWS Cleveland serves. Check the openings on the map of snow spotters locations, here.
Each snowflake represents an existing snow spotter. NWS is hoping to fill the gaps for the 2024-2025 winter season.
