NWS: Elevated fire danger continues midweek

Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 446 am Wed Oct 30 from NWS Cleveland

Gusty southwest winds of 25 to 40 mph will persist today, and RH values will dip into the 38 to 45% range this afternoon. Given the antecedent drought conditions, the above average temperatures, and the gusty winds, cannot rule out some potential fire spread if ignited.

Wind gusts could reach 40 to 45 mph as a cold front approaches the region Thursday afternoon.

Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitors in Ohio

Fair and 60 degrees at Marion Municipal Airport this morning, with a clear sunny day ahead, high 78. Low relative humidity persisting today presents elevated fire danger, avoid igniting fires in these dry conditions as burning will be difficult to control.

Current streamflows remain on the low end of the scale, some of the lowest flows in the Muskingum River watersheds recorded this time of year. Muskingum River continues to run at record low at Dresden and McConnelsville today, Salt Creek remains low though not at the extreme low measured yesterday near Chandlersville. Hocking River is in 1st percentile low at Athens today. Little Muskingum River is up to 2nd percentile near Bloomfield, Yellow Creek is up slightly, 2nd percentile near Hammondsville.

24 out of 32 watersheds are rated on the drought map midweek. Severe drought continues on the Ohio River - Mississippi River basin side of the state divide, the severe drought persists in the south central and south east. Muskingum River basin is in severe drought from Walhonding to Hocking River watershed again today. Adjacent in the Ohio River minor tributaries, Wheeling Creek and Shade River watersheds remain in severe hydrologic drought. Moderate drought remains in Scioto basin's Tygarts watershed, Ohio River minor tributary Raccoon-Symmes has recovered overnight from moderate drought to below normal rating. Ohio River's Laughery watershed in Hamilton County remains in moderate drought.

North of the divide into the Lake Erie drainage area, Auglaize River and Lower Maumee River watersheds continue in moderate drought. Shifting east, Sandusky River and Grand River watersheds remain in moderate drought. All remaining area of the state is rated below normal with the exception of 8 watersheds: St Mary's, Upper Maumee, Tiffin and Blanchard River watersheds remain drought-free in the northwest. In the northeast, Black-Rocky and Ashtabula-Chagrin watersheds are unrated. South of the divide, Wills Creek and Ohio River minor tributary Brush-Whiteoak watershed are unrated. Al remainaing area is below normal, if not already named in moderate or severe drought.

WT HAB Tracker
from the satellite monitoring program of the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science(NCCOS)

The latest upload from NCCOS was captured Oct 29 at enormous surface wind speed 24.9 mph. This capture is mostly cloud obscured with very little HAB showing. The prior clear image captured Oct 28 at wind speed 5.4 mph showed Sandusky Bay HAB with partially dispersed widespread HABs in the inner and outer bay area east and west of OH 269 at the concentration 300 to 400 thousand cells per ml. A band of dispersed HABs seen outside Sandusky Bay stretches to the east Vermilion-on-the-Lake, wraps around Kelleys Island with low concentration HABs, 100 thousand cells per ml or less.

NWS Cleveland calling for Snow Observers
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland is looking for new volunteers to measure snow in the Snow Observation Program. If you are already in the program, you do not need to re-apply.

New snow observers are needed in all of the counties that NWS Cleveland serves. Check the openings on the map of snow spotters locations, here.
Each snowflake represents an existing snow spotter. NWS is hoping to fill the gaps for the 2024-2025 winter season.
