Severe drought persists in the northwest
Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitors in Ohio
Below normal conditions persist statewide, impacting both sides of the state divide. Drainage basins of the Ohio River - Mississippi River including Great Miami River, Scioto River, Muskingum River and Ohio River minor tributaries tend to lower streamflows in the lower basins, some normal streamflow ratings hanging on in the upper basins are in the low end of the normal range. North of the divide, streamflows run mostly below seasonal normal toward Lake Erie.
The Ohio drought map has Tiffin River watershed colored with severe drought, Grand River watershed in the northeast Lake Erie basin remains in moderate drought rating heading into the weekend. Adjacent watersheds in the northeast are rated below normal Friday, including Cuyahoga River watershed of the Lake Erie basin and adjacent across the drainage divide impacting Ohio River minor tributaries Mahoning River and Wheeling Creek watershed. The better part of Muskingum River basin in east central Ohio is rated below normal, extending to adjacent Ohio River minor tributary Shade River watershed. The southwest is unrated on the drought map.
WT HAB Tracker from the satellite monitoring program of the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science(NCCOS)
The latest upload from NCCOS was captured Oct 10 at surface wind speed 4.3 mph. This wind speed is the first time in several days that we can make a reasonable assessment of the extent of the bloom mass. Maumee Bay continues to appear free of HAB around the outlet of Maumee River at Toledo, an open water bloom appears halfway between Maumee Bay and North Maumee Bay at low concentration 100 thousand cells per ml. Maumee Bay State Park appears with a widespread HAB mass 2 nm off shore in the east end of the park, at the low concentration 100 thousand cells per ml or less. A dense band of HAB approximately half a nm wide runs along shore from Cedar Point National Wildlife Refuge along the Ohio shoreline to Catawba Island becoming widespread around Port Clinton and a bit higher concentration, 300 thousand cells per ml. Sandusky Bay remains completely socked in with HAB at the high concentration 700 thousand cells per ml. Widespread HAB appears outside of Sandusky Bay Cedar Point past Vermilion-on-the-Lake from the shoreline extending one to two nm into open water, the concentration is low, 100 thousand cells per ml.
The past few images from NCCOS have been captured at high wind speed with the HABs all but disappeared. We had the expectation that the HABs could be submerged, we now verify this was the case with the wind speed down the buoyant HAB mats have resurfaced.
