Lake Erie HAB in retreat

Streamflow Situation from the USGS network of streamflow gauges in Ohio
Sunny and clear again in Cleveland area with no hazardous weather outlook from the NWS Thursday. Streamflows run lower today than yesterday, a mix of below seasonal to above seasonal normal levels statewide. Wills Creek watershed in the central interior Muskingum River basin runs at moderate drought, an adjacent watershed with surface area draining in the opposite direction is rated below normal, that's Wheeling Creek watershed in the Ohio River minor tributaries. North of the divide, Tiffin River watershed in the northwest is still holding a below normal rating, as is Grand River watershed in the northeast. As of this report, there are no active floods, no extreme high flows reported. An extreme low, 1st percentile is showing up in the Muskingum River basin in Mill Creek, running a record low water level for this date in the 87 years this site has been in the monitoring program.

WT HAB Tracker
from the satellite monitoring program of the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science(NCCOS), Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN) and State sources where available

Lake Erie west basin
The latest upload from NCCOS is the first clear view of Lake Erie in the last week. This new image captured October 2 at surface wind speed 6.2 mph shows the Maumee Bay HAB down to a fraction of its full extent last seen Sept 25. Widespread HAB appears to have moved right out of the Maumee Bay State Park area, clearing away from the Ohio shoreline altogether. The remaining HAB activity is seen in the west side of Maumee Bay from the outlet of the river at Toledo up to North Maumee Bay, the hot spot in North Maumee Bay 1 million cells per ml. Another widespread bloom is hanging out in the open water off shore between Monroe, MI and North Maumee Bay at moderate concentration 300 thousand cells or less per ml. There is no longer any sign of HAB activity in Portage River, out last clear image Sept 25 showed widespread HAB for the last 5 miles of Portage River to the outlet, at a fairly high concentration around 700 thousand cells per ml. This HAB appears to have cleared out of the channel.

Sandusky Bay HAB remains widespread at high concentration 900 thousand cells per ml from Pickerel Point to OH-269, becoming thin dispersed mats in the water from OH-269 to Cedar Point, retaining that same concentration. Muddy Creek Bay is partially cloud obscured in this image, it does look like there is some HAB activity left in that water, also at the high concentration 900 thousand cells per ml. See the latest NCCOS image, here.
