Lake Erie west basin
The latest upload from NCCOS satellite captured Sep 23 at wind speed 19.2 mph, a partially clear view of Lake Erie west basin. The high concentration in this image is the west end of Maumee Bay State Park, 2 million cells per ml. North Maumee Bay is next at 1 million cells per ml, the remaining area of the HAB mass from the outlet of Maumee River north to near Monroe on the Michigan shore, concentration around 600 thousand cells per ml. Clouds obscure the image east of Metzger Marsh Wildlife Area. The prior image captured Sept 22 shows the lakewide HAB in Sandusky Bay and Muddy Creek Bay 800 to 900 thousand cells per ml. The Sept 21 capture shows bluegreen lakeside of Cedar Point right up to the northern shore around 100 thousand cells per ml. See the NCCOS image here.
Maumee Bay State Park remains under an algal toxin advisory, the latest water sample taken Sept 17 is below 1 ug/L, if another consecutive sample value is below the safe threshold 8ug/L the advisory will likely be rescinded. Given the satellite image shows a high concentration dense bloom remains in the Maumee Bay State Park, caution is warranted around this water even with a recent test below threshhold.
