Muddy Creek Bay develops lakewide algal bloom

According to the National Weather Service, there are no hazardous weather outlooks in effect as of this report.

WT HAB Tracker from the satellite monitoring program of the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science(NCCOS), Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN) and State sources where available

Lake Erie west basin
The latest upload from NCCOS satellite captured Sep 19 at wind speed 8.1 mph, another clear view of Lake Erie west basin. The big change in the last two images is the incursion of the Sandusky Bay HAB into Muddy Bay, now lakewide at 800 to 900 thousand cells per ml. A dense band of bluegreen laying lakeside of Cedar Point is slightly higher concentration today, 300 thousand cells per ml. The widespread HAB activity south of Pelee Island now extends to the north shore of Kelleys Island, 200 thousand cells per ml. The wind being above 4 mph may be distorting the picture, it is possible that we are not seeing the full area and extent of this open water bloom. See the NCCOS image here.

High concentration HAB prize again goes to Maumee Bay State Park, the west end of the beach stuck at the 2 million cells per ml level, the bloom mat surrounding this hotspot at 1 million cells per ml, tapering off over the next ten nm of open water to 500 thousand cells per ml. North Maumee Bay and the Maumee River outlet inner bay Toledo are down in concentration in the latest image, from 1 million cells per ml in the 24-hour-prior image, to 700 to 800 thousand cells per ml in the Sep 19 image.

The Recreational Public Health Advisory posted for South Bass Island State Park on August 19 has been rescinded. The algal toxin level measured in the last two consecutive weekly samples came below the safety threshhold for recreational water 8 ug/L. Maumee Bay State Park remains under an algal toxin advisory, the latest water sample taken Sept 10 has returned a microcystins result of 10 ug/L, down from a high of 50 mid August, and 35 near the end of August.
