Maumee Bay State Park HAB update from NCCOS
Normal to below normal streamflows statewide as the dog days of summer roll over. Make the most of the season by considering the beach and water conditions ahead of time.

Lake Erie west basin
Algal toxin advisories are in effect for two Lake Erie State Park beaches today. Maumee Bay State Park has been issued the second such advisory of the season, a month to the day after the first advisory, August 19. The HAB observed by satellite monitoring has been parked and cooking up a high concentration, take caution and observe the posted warnings.
The latest satellite image of Lake Erie West basin was captured August 20 at wind speed, 8.8 mph. The image is partially cloud obscured, showing enough of the bloom to catch the extent and concentration in key areas. Maumee Bay State Park continues to host a high concentration HAB from the shoreline to several nm into open water, 1 million to 2 million cells per 100 ml. Toledo, North Maumee Bay also 1 to 2 million cells, Metzer Marsh Wildlife Area, Catawba Island east side experiencing the higher concentration of the widespread HAB also. HAB concentration around the islands, including South Bass, Middle Bass and Kelleys bluegreen is less than 300 thousand cells per 100 ml. Sandusky Bay HAB appears broken up dispersed east and west of OH-269 at around 700 thousand cells per 100 ml. See the NCCOS images here.
Thirty beaches are tagged with recreational public health advisories due to elevated bacteria levels midweek. Updates are in progress. More to follow.

The latest image of Lake Champlain was captured yesterday, Aug 20, another day of heavy cloud conditions. A previous image caught Aug 18 showed a slice of the northeast Baie Missisquoi HAB between clouds, concentration down to 600 thousand cells per 100 ml. The last clear image was acquired August 14, this same bluegreen bloom on that date at concentration 1 to 3 million cells per 100 ml. See our NY HAB report for more details here.
From NYS Department of Environmental Conservation: One hundred and thirty-seven active HABs midweek, up from 126 yesterday including the first bluegreen reports of the season for Lake Carmel and Sagaponack Lake. See the impacted water bodies list here, updates are in progress as new reports are confirmed.
Louisiana: The latest upload from the NCCOS is dated August 20, taken at wind speed 8.3 mph is a clear capture showing a clear Lake Pontchartrain and a very high concentration spreading through Bayou Fortier and Lac des Allemands. Hotspots continue to expand, 1 to 4 millon cells per 100 ml lakewide, the highest concentration found in the east half of Bayou Fortier. Lake Fields is completely socked in with HABs 3 to 4 million cells. Lakes Verret and Palourde chug along at a consistent 700-800 thousand cells per 100 ml, lakewide.
