Severe drought hits Lake Erie basin

June 18, 2024 1248 pm EDT

Hazardous Weather outlook weather message issued 941 am June 18 by NWS Cleveland forecast center
HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT FRIDAY...Heat index values of 100 to 104 degrees are expected at times this week with variability each day due to clouds and scattered showers and storms.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. The prolonged nature of the heat may increase heat stress with time. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1

Streamflow Situation
from the USGS network of streamflow gauges in Ohio

Seasonal normal flow ratings are even less common Tuesday as the current streamflow map slides in the direction of lower than seasonal flows. The number of stations reporting much below normal has increased in the Great Miami, Scioto and Lake Erie basin. The highest flows in the state are still found in the upper Mad River basin and in the Mahoning River upper channel. The lowest flow recorded today is on the Chagrin River, as the Ashtabula Chagrin watershed descends into severe drought overnight. Adjacent Grand River watershed remains below normal, along with Lower Maumee, St. Josephs, Upper Wabash and St. Marys watersheds on the Lake Erie side of the divide. Ohio River minor tributary Raccoon Symmes has escalated drought status to moderate overnight, Shade, Wheeling and Little Beaver Creek remain below normal. New on the drought map Tuesday is Tuscarawas River watershed in the Muskingum River basin, joining adjacent Wills Creek below normal. As yesterday, the Lower Great Miami, Little Miami and Paint Creek watersheds are rated below normal.

WT USA Flood Tracker provisional data from the network of USGS streamflow monitors

Twenty-three streamflow gauges record flows above flood stage in the US Tuesday, the same as yesterday. WT USA tracks the flow levels on three of these reference flood events, all occurring in the state of Louisiana.

Louisiana: Bayou Bodcau Lake continues to flood the basin near Shreveport in Region 1, now two feet ten inches above minor flood stage. In Region 4, west boundary river Sabine water level is up four inches overnight near Logansport, currently recorded a foot and eight inches over minor flood stage. Flow volume has been increasing here the last few days, from 23000 cubic feet per second Sunday to 26000 cfs Monday to now more than 27000 Tuesday. Downstream to the station near Ruliff, the Sabine River runs a foot and four inches over the channel, also at 27000 cfs. For more info on the flooding in Louisiana, see black tags indicating flood flow volume and gauge height updated daily here.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
