High concentration HAB in Sandusky Bay

A new sat image for Lake Erie was snapped June 13 at wind speed 15 mph with a clear view of the Sandusky Bay high concentration HAB first seen on the south shore from Bayview to Willow Point Wildlife Area on Tuesday June 11. This HAB matched the concentration color scale for a count of 1.5 million cells per 100 ml sample. the latest raw water test results for Sandusky City have total microcystins below minimum reporting level as of June 8. More to follow as new labs are posted.

Streamflow Situation
from the USGS network of streamflow gauges in Ohio

Streams and rivers are running slower through Ohio Friday, the below normal trend is digging in on both sides of the divide. As of this report, there are no active floodings or 99th percentile high flows. The highest flows statewide are found in upper Mad River channel of the Great Miami basin. Normal ratings are applied for streamflows in the 25th to 75th percentile for this day in water history. The number of normal ratings has been declining all week, a look into the details shows most of these normal rated locations are in the low end of normal range. Much below normal ratings have sprung up in the northeast Friday, the first part of the Lake Erie basin to go below normal. As of this report, there are no extreme low flows. The drought map has taken on an area in the Lake Erie drainage basin, Upper Wabash watershed in Mercer County. Muskingum River basin's Wills Creek watershed remains on the drought map at below normal, along with Ohio minor tributary Raccoon-Symmes watershed, below normal from Jackson to east Lawrence Counties.

WT USA Flood Tracker provisional data from the network of USGS streamflow monitors

Thirty-two flood events are recorded on the national USGS network Friday, down from thirty-five Thursday. Another flooding has been rolled up in Louisiana overnight with Region 4 Calcasieu River retreating back into its channel near Glenmora around midnight. WT USA now tracking three reference floods events through the coverage area New York, Ohio, Georgia and Louisiana. At the writing of this report, all are occurring in Louisiana.

Louisiana: Sabine River flooding ended yesterday at Logansport leaving two monitored sites downstream on the west border Sabine River still over the channel, currently recorded four feet four inches over flood stage near Bon Wier and two feet nine inches over flood stage near Ruliff, rolling along between 40 and 50 thousand cubic feet per second. Bayou Bodcau Lake is still out of the basin by four feet. For more information on the flood trend in Louisiana, see black tags indicating flood flow volume and gauge height updated daily here.

There is growing confidence in a heat wave developing Sunday through the middle of next week. Heat indices will likely approach 100 degrees beginning on Monday.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.
