Ohio River flooding ends
Water news for Monday, April 8, 2024 update 156 pm EDT
Flood Tracker provisional data from USGS streamflow monitors
Forty-four streamflow gauges record flooding in the USA Monday, down from sixty-eight yesterday. WT tracks the nation's most common natural disaster dynamics through New York, Ohio, Georgia and Louisiana. As of this report we are watching 7 monitors indicating active flooding; 1 in Georgia, 2 in Louisiana, 1 in NY, also under coastal flood advisory, 3 in Ohio.
Current streamflow map for Ohio is down to three sites indicating provisional flows above flood stage. Killbuck Creek retreated below flood stage at Killbuck just before the noon hour today. As of midnight last night, Ohio River is no longer flooding at Portsmouth. Muskingum River is flooding near Coshocton, Stillwater Creek is flooding at Uhrichsville. Tiffin River is still inches over flood stage at Stryker in the Lake Erie west basin. This overflow looks to be ending today. Scioto River tributaries Alum Creek and Olentangy River continue to run high in the upper basin.
Georgia, Day 33: Satilla River is still recording a foot over flood stage at Atkinson on a steady declining trend. Tallapoosa River watershed has escalated to moderate drought rating with adjacent area of the Coosa and Tennessee River watersheds rated below normal.
New York State: Hudson River is flooding after lunch near Poughkeepsie. Niagara - Lake Erie watershed posts one station in the 99th percentile this afternoon, Cazenovia Creek appears to be on the rise at Ebenezer. As this is an isolated event for the west, we will confirm the reading with USGS Water Science Center. Swan River still indicates above 99th percentile at East Patchogue on Long Island with a coastal flood statement in effect for this evening.
In Louisiana Region 1 northwest, Bayou Bodcau continues to relax, just three feet over flood stage near Shreveport. Over to the east state line, watershed Region 7, Pearl River is no longer flooding near Bogalusa, still overflowing downstream in St Tammany Parish at Town of Pearl River.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.
USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
