HAPPENING NOW
Tiffin River ceases flooding at Stryker
Flooding in the USA - tracking floods in NY, OH, GA, LA

Water news for Monday, March 18, 2024 updated 222 pm EDT

Streamflow Situation provisional data supplied by USGS
Tiffin River breached flood stage at Stryker around 1130 pm Saturday night with the flooding ending around 9 pm last night. High flows in this part of the state are associated with streambank erosion and agricultural stormwater that feeds the HAB in Lake Erie. The spring season is the critical time for nutrient loading into Lake Erie, drinking water source for 12.5 million people in the US and Canada. More to follow as we track streamflows and the Lake Erie HAB on this the tenth anniversary of Toledo water crisis.

Streamflows are mainly normal Monday with a handful of stations recording below the seasonal average flow volume for this date. No active flooding, no extreme high or low flows registering in the network as of this report.

Flooding in the USA provisional data from USGS streamflow monitors

Thirty-three sites mark flooding across the network of the USGS streamflow monitors in continental USA Monday morning, down from forty-three this time Sunday.

WT tracks flooding and drinking water quality in four states. A single station recording coastal flooding in NY over the weekend, Reynolds Channel at Point Lookout is this morning presumed to be a technical error, more to follow.

Tiffin River flooding subsided at Stryker in northwest Ohio last night, as reported above.

Four stations record flooding in Louisiana Monday morning including Bayou Dorcheat near Springhill, Bayou Bodcau near Shreveport in the northwest and Pearl River flooding near Bogalusa and downstream municipality of Pearl River along the east state line.

Georgia is the flood leader again today, accounting for one third of the active flooding in the USA Monday. The current flood event in GA began on March 6 caused by heavy rain through north and central Georgia. Flint River ceased flooding this morning while the initial report was compiled, ending flooding in the Gulf of Mexico basin of southwest GA. Ocmulgee, Altamaha, Satilla, Savannah, Ogeechee and, Ohoopee Rivers continue to send floodwater down to the Atlantic Ocean. Refer to black tags on the maps for updated flood flow levels, blue tags for 99th percentile high flows.

As Ohio drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water bodies including lakes, rivers and reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the raw source water, requiring additional treatment to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to shallower conditons and warmer temperatures in surface water bodies, which can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present.

WTOH.us tracks current streamflow conditions with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in 32 watersheds of the state's 5 drainage basins. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the high and low streamflows that may be impacting drinking water water in Ohio today.

Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow against seasonal average
No part of Ohio State is rated on the drought map Monday.

Drinking Water Advisories
East Liverpool - A precautionary boil water advisory was issued for rate-payers on Walnut Street and any others experiencing the water outage last week Thursday.
