Harmful Algal Bloom HAB Update
The latest image captured by satellite is dated Feb 25, a perfectly clear image of west basin Lake Erie from Maumee Bay and up the Michigan shoreline past Detroit, including the Canadian shore. The Ohio shoreline is visible in this image from Toledo to Vermilion-on-th-Lake where the frame ends.
This image is similar to the last two captures in that the surface wind speed is extremely high. When no HAB is visible at wind speed such as this image was acquired, 24.3 mph, we cannot be confident in making a HAB-free statement, as HAB material can become submerged and mixed down the water column, out of the range of the camera.
With this limitation in mind, we do see a small localized HAB along the Michigan shore south of Detroit, south of where the HAB was spotted in the previous image. Another small localized HAB is visible on shore around the Metzger Marsh wildlife area on the Ohio shore. The open water HAB spotted five miles north of Cedar Point National Wildlife Refuge is not visible today at all. A small localized HAB is spotted on the northeast shore of Pelee Island in Canada, with no other HAB activity visible.
In the previous image taken Feb 24, we noted localized HABs along shore west of Port Clinton and east of Catawba Island. A clear view of Sandusky Bay includes all of the islands across the international border to the Canadian shore. The clear view extends to the edge of the frame at Vermilion-on-the-Lake. Here we see localized HAB activity in the inner Sandusky Bay north shore, along the northwest shores of Isle St George, Middle Bass and South Bass islands where wind could be piling the HAB material along the shores. Localized HABs appear on the east shore of Kelleys island, and along mainland shore near Vermilion-on-the-Lake. All HABs match the concentration 100 thousand cells per 100 ml.
Streamflow Situation from USGS Waterwatch based on real-time flow monitors across Ohio
Below normal flows take over Upper Great Miami basin and the central to east Ohio Lake Erie drainage area Monday, including much below normal flow on the Cuyahoga River near the outlet Newburgh Heights, Old Woman Creek in the Huron-Vermilion watershed and Sandusky River all having a station rated much below seasonal normal.
South of the state divide, Great Miami tributary Sevenmile Creek is registering much below normal at Camden. Paint Creek is showing up much below normal near Bourneville in the Scioto River drainage basin. In the Upper Ohio minor tributaries, Mahoning River watershed in the northeast, Eagle Creek is flowing much below normal at Phalanx.
The remainder of the state surface is seeing seasonal normal streamflows, including northwest Lake Erie drainage, most of the Ohio River minor tributaries, most of Muskingum and Scioto River basins.
A large storm system is tracking in, expecting to hit Ohio Tuesday and Wednesday. More to follow.
Drought map from USGS Waterwatch 7-day average streamflow compared with historic flow for today's date
For the Lake Erie basin, Ashtabula-Chagrin watershed is back on at below normal Monday, joining adjacent watersheds Grand and Cuyahoga River. In the west Lake Erie drainage area, Lower Maumee is off the drought map leaving Blanchard, Auglaize and Upper Wabash watersheds below normal Monday.
South of the height-of-land, Ohio River minor tributaries Shenango River, Little Beaver Creek, Raccoon-Symmes, Brush Whiteoak and Laughery watersheds remain rated below normal.
For the east interior area, Muskingum River basin's Wills Creek and Licking River watersheds are rated below normal Monday. In Scioto River basin, Paint Creek and Tygarts watersheds are still rated below normal. For the Great Miami basin, just the Lower Great Miami River watershed remains below normal Monday.
The height-of-land divide in Ohio runs from Mercer County in the west angling northeast up to Ashtabula County on the east state border. Streamflows north of the divide feed Lake Erie, flows south of the divide run to the Ohio River, part of the Mississippi River basin that drains the majority of interior North America to the Gulf of Mexico.
