National Weather Service Hazardous weather outlook issued 503 am Jan 12

WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 1 AM EST SUNDAY...This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for north central Ohio, northeast Ohio and northwest Ohio for today and tonight.

Please listen to NOAA Weather Radio or go to weather.gov on the Internet for more information about the wind advisory.

Streamflow Situation from USGS Waterwatch based on real-time flow monitors across Ohio
Above normal to much above normal streamflows statewide Friday. Stillwater Creek flooding subsided yesterday midafternoon at Uhrichsville, the Creek flow is slowing down, as of this update just over 9 feet deep, flood stage is 10 ft.

As of Friday, there are no more extreme high or low flows recorded on the USGS network in Ohio. NOAA and National Weather Service announced an expansion of the flood advisory network with two new locations having minor, moderate and major flood thresholds established in December 2023. The addition of flood stage information to the monitoring sites allows monitoring and reporting agencies to know when flooding is imminent or occurring. Alerts and advisories are based on this critical information allowing for response actions such as deployment of barriers to divert flooding around critical infrastructure, and allow for evacuation of residents where necessary.

See the black tags on the map for flood details, blue tags for 99th percentile flows.

Drought situation from USGS Waterwatch 7-day average streamflow compared with historic flow for today's date
The drought map is empty again today.

The height-of-land divide in Ohio runs from Mercer County in the west angling northeast up to Ashtabula County on the east state border. Streamflows north of the divide feed Lake Erie, flows south of the divide run to the Ohio River, part of the Mississippi River basin that drains the majority of interior North America to the Gulf of Mexico.

As streamflow conditions shift and change in the Ohio River basin, track the effects south down the Mississippi River into to Louisiana. Louisiana is finally experiencing some relief for the "Exceptional Drought" as rated on the USA National drought map. As of Friday, Jan 12, the Mississippi River channel through Louisiana is not rated on the drought map. Louisiana experienced the most prolonged and severe dry conditions in decades. Harmful Algal Bloom update based on the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) satellite monitoring program
A new image provided by NCCOS was captured on Jan 11 with surface wind conditions measured at 17.1 mph. This image is completely cloud obscured, as was the image of January 10. A previous image captured Jan 8 shows dispersed HABs in open water from Pelee Island to the Canadian shoreline matching a moderate concentration of 100 thousand cells per 100 ml or less. Image from Jan 5 shows a clear view of Sandusky Bay and open water to the east. The image taken Jan 4 clearly showed Maumee Bay and the west shore of Lake Erie. Patching these images together, Lake Erie HAB has been visible from Maumee Bay to the east edge of the image capture around Vermilion-on-the-Lake and north to Canadian shoreline within the last week.

See the HABs button to the right of the map for details.

Drinking Water matters
Lisbon has issued a system-wide BWA due to a water leak Wednesday. More to follow.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
