Another strong storm system will impact the area from Friday into the weekend. Additional rainfall of a half inch to an inch is likely and will lead to additional rises on area rivers. Strong gusty winds to 50 mph are also possible Friday night into Saturday as a strong cold front arrives. Rain will transition to snow behind the front and accumulating snowfall is likely across the snowbelt region of Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania. An Arctic airmass will move in behind the system for the start of next week with sub zero wind chills possible Monday Night into Tuesday.

Listen to NOAA Weather Radio or go to weather.gov on the internet for more information.

Streamflow Situation from USGS Waterwatch based on real-time flow monitors across Ohio
Little Muskingum River is flooding near Bloomfield, running over four and a half feed over flood stage at 6770 cubic feet per second. Tributaries are also flooding, West Fork Duck Creek is overflowing its banks at Macksburg and Duck Creek is flooding below Whipple.

Several stations are recording 99th percentile flows by noon. Shade River breached action stage near Chester at 8 pm last night. The river appears to have reached peak flow 530 am on the decline as of this update, currently running just over 14 ft deep. The channel begins to flood at 16 ft near Chester.

Muskingum River tributaries Kokosing River at Mount Vernon and South Fork Licking River near Hebron are running 99th percentile flows. These stations indicate peak flow has been reached and levels appear to be receding as of this update. There are no extreme low flows to report.

See the black tags on the map for flood details, blue tags for 99th percentile flows.

Drought situation from USGS Waterwatch 7-day average streamflow compared with historic flow for today's date
The drought map cleared considerably overnight as statewide streamflows jumped to much above normal and high levels everywhere. On the west side today, the Upper and Lower Great Miami River watersheds remain on the drought map rated below normal, Auglaize River watershed in the Lake Erie basin remains at moderate drought with Upper Maumee, St Marys and St Josephs River watersheds still rated below normal.

For the central and east Ohio watersheds, only Racoon-Symmes watershed remains on the map Wednesday, the rest of the state is experiencing above normal streamflows.

The height-of-land divide in Ohio runs from Mercer County in the west angling northeast up to Ashtabula County on the east state border. Streamflows north of the divide feed Lake Erie, flows south of the divide run to the Ohio River, part of the Mississippi River basin that drains the majority of interior North America to the Gulf of Mexico.

As streamflow conditions shift and change in the Ohio River basin, track the effects south down the Mississippi River into to Louisiana. Louisiana is rated "Exceptional Drought" on the USA National drought map, experiencing the most prolonged and severe dry conditions in decades. Drinking Water matters
City of Bellefontaine has issued a BWA following a water main on the weekend. The advisory applies for all customer connections on Pleasant Drive until further notice.

Harmful Algal Bloom update based on the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) satellite monitoring program
A new image provided by NCCOS was captured on Jan 8 with surface wind conditions measured at 8.5 mph. This image is mostly cloud obscured with a limited view of Lake Erie north of the international border. Dispersed HABs are visible in open water from Pelee Island to the Canadian shoreline matching a moderate concentration of 100 thousand cells per 100 ml or less. The previous image was captured Jan 5 showing a clear view of Sandusky Bay and open water to the east. The prior image taken Jan 4 clearly showed Maumee Bay and the west shore of Lake Erie. Patching these images together, Lake Erie HAB has been visible from Maumee Bay to the east edge of the image capture around Vermilion-on-the-Lake and north to Canadian shoreline within the last five days.

See the HABs button to the right of the map for details.
