Streamflow Situation from USGS Waterwatch based on real-time flow monitors across Ohio
Below normal to much below normal streamflows registered on the west side ofthe state this week with mostly normal flows showing in central and east Ohio Friday. The pattern of normal and below normal flows has been consistent all week, creating a drought map from the 7-day average flows. One extreme low level is recorded in the Sandusky watershed of Lake Erie west basin again Friday, Tymochtee Creek at Crawford. There are no extreme high flows as of this update.
Drought situation from USGS Waterwatch 7-day average streamflow compared with historic flow for today's date
Auglaize River watershed holds a severe drought rating Friday, adjacent Blanchard River watershed is locked in at moderate drought. All area surrounding is rated below normal. On the east side draining to Lake Erie, Grand River watershed is below normal. Ohio minor tributaries are mostly below normal, appearing as seen earlier in the week with one exception, the Ohio Brush-Whiteoak watershed has returned to normal leaving a gap in the area bordering the Ohio River that is rated with below normal flow.
The Great Miami basin and adjacent Scioto basin's Paint River and Tygarts watersheds are still showing up below normal. The balance of Ohio surface area is absent from the drought map.
The height-of-land divide in Ohio runs from Mercer County in the west angling northeast up to Ashtabula County on the east state border. Streamflows north of the divide feed Lake Erie, flows south of the divide run to the Ohio River, part of the Mississippi River basin that drains the majority of interior North America to the Gulf of Mexico.
As the drought conditions shift and change in the Ohio River basin, track the effects south down the Mississippi River into to Louisiana, rated "Exceptional Drought", the highest category on the National Drought map. Visit WTLA.us for more information on downstream effects.
