Record high water level on Huron River near Milan
Streamflow Situation from the network of US Geological Survey monitors in Ohio
After warnings from the NWS Friday, for ice jamming and localized flooding through the Lake Erie drainage basin Friday and Saturday. A record high water level is recorded on Huron River, the site near Milan got up into action stage for flooding Saturday. Flow peaked mid-afternoon Saturday with no breach recorded at the station near Milan, the highest Feb 3 recorded in 67 years. Vermilion River rose into action stage briefly Saturday evening, likewise with no flood breach recorded near Vermilion.
Water levels have normalized in most of Ohio watersheds, just the Muskingum River basin and neighboring Ohio River minor tributary still in drought ratings after the weekend. Check out the front page map with watershed layer and directional arrows, following along with the drought map description that follows. The drought map depicts seven-day average streamflows, rated against historic water levels.
Wills Creek watershed remains in extreme drought as reported late last week. Adjacent watershed in the Muskingum River basin has been downgraded from moderate drought to below normal over the weekend. Ohio River minor tributary Wheeling Creek watershed was rated severe drought much of last week, dropped to moderate drought over the weekend, now downgraded overnight to below normal. In the Lake Erie drainage basin, only the northwest St. Josephs River watershed remains on the drought map, down-graded from moderate drought to below normal. All other watersheds of Ohio are back to normal conditions for the time of year.
Safe Drinking Water Act Advisories
Pike County: Waverly re-issued a boil advisory over the weekend, after the previous advisory had been lifted on Friday at noon. This BWA was prompted by a water supply issue. A leak on St. Mary's Lane drew down and depleted the finished water storage faster than the treatment plant could meet the demand. Recent work has been done to increase flow volume of treated water to customers. In this case, the leak caused the supply to fail. Following the leak repair, the BWA will be rescinded after two consecutive daily samples testing clear of microbiological contamination.
New quarterly stats are out from EPA, Ohio has 41 drinking water facilities on the new Serious Violator list, see the updated list, here.
