Drinking Water matters
Buckeye Water District has issued a boil water advisory for connections on OH-518 and OH-45 starting at OH-518 west to the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center. The advisory was prompted by a water line break and will remain in effect until further notice.
Kimbolton water customers are still under temporary boil water advisories as of Wednesday afternoon.
See the yellow location tags on the map for details.
Streamflow Situation
As of Wednesday afternoon, all USGS streamflow gages are recording below the 90th percentile flows with no systems flooding. Flows at most stations are rated normal through the state with a handful of stations registering below to much below normal. There are no streamflow monitors registering low flow today.
The drought map shows two areas rated below normal overnight, one in the Scioto River watershed in central state and Auglaize River watershed in the northwest. As of Wednesday afternoon there are no areas rated with hydrologic drought conditions.
Hazardous Spills reported to OEPA
A spill incident impacting water was reported October 19 in in the Tuscarawas River watershed. The incident file indicates an unknown amount of trade name mixture spilled off Withrich Rd in Wayne County. Based on the coordinates given in the report, the spill may have reached a tributary of Sugar Creek, listed in the report as an unnamed water body.
HABs update from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science satellite monitoring program for West Basin Lake Erie
The Oct 24 image is clear with no part of the west basin obscured by cloud cover. The image shows the HAB in Sandusky Bay with no other bloom activity detected. As we have seen during most of October, the wind speed has consistently been above the 4 mph threshold for a reliable assessment of the HAB area. The Oct 24 picture was recorded at a wind speed of 15.5 mph. Only the HAB in sheltered Sandusky Bay is visible at this wind speed.
Sandusky Bay inner bay area shows widespread HAB, running from the north shore to south shore at 800 thousand cells per 100 ml.
The outer Sandusky Bay area from Bayview to Cedar Point has two localized HABs, one large HAB along the north shore and a small HAB along the south shore. Both localized HABs are match the color scale for a moderate concentration of 200 thousand cells per 100 ml.
See the bluegreen location tags on the map for more details.
Note that wind speed above 4 mph is associated with the mixing of any HAB mass down into the water column where it can be undetectable to the camera. This makes the task of interpreting HAB area and concentration more challenging. Where the image shows no HAB activity and a high wind, it is likely that the HAB is submerged and can still be producing toxins impacting drinking water supply even closer to the raw water intakes. The last two weeks images have been cloud obscured or taken at wind speeds that make an interpretation unreliable. Check the HABs button to the right of the map for updates on the Lake Erie bloom as clear new images are captured.
