The first time, a warning
In a sadly ironic twist, an employee of an environmental company was indicted on one count of knowingly violating the Clean Water Act and sentenced to over a quarter of a million dollars in restitution to the Oil Spill Liability Trust.
In 2002, the environmental company neglected to securely contain waste oil stored on company property. When the waste oil washed out into the environment with run-off, the Ohio EPA issued a notice of violation.
One year later, a white oily scum flowed once again from the company property and into the waters of the state of Ohio. This time, the guilty parties were hit with a criminal record and ordered to pay heavy restitution costs.
