Rain on the way, statewide
Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS river monitoring sites in Ohio
A few clouds, 43 degrees at Marion Municipal Airport, Cleveland local forecast center looking for a high around 50 degrees with showers coming later this afternoon. Tonight, 80% chance of more showers before 3 am, up to an inch of total rainfall possible. NWS Wilmington reports overcast conditions, 48 degrees with a high of around 53. Showers are likely today, mainly after 2pm. Tonight, more rain showers expected before 9pm, shifting to patchy drizzle with a slight chance of showers after 3am. No more than two tenths expected during the day and night.
Below normal streamflows are once again more common than seasonal normal, low flows found in all but the northeast and southwest watersheds. Three monitoring locations are rated low: one in the Lake Erie basin, a tributary of Sandusky River watershed, and two in the Ohio River minor tributaries, Short Creek and Wheeling Creek. Short Creek is at a record low level near Dillonvale for this date in 82 years of water measurements.
Overnight, the number of watersheds in drought mode has doubled. Yesterday it was seven watersheds on the drought map, today 14 of 32 watersheds are rated below normal, moderate or severe drought, these are found on both sides of the drainage divide. The most serious drought assignment is given to Wheeling Creek watershed - Belmont, Harrison and Jefferson Counties rated severe for some time, followed by moderate drought in neighboring Wills Creek watershed. Moderate drought rating is also applied to St Jospehs River watershed, affecting Williams County in the northwest. Most of the remaining surface area of the Lake Erie west drainage basin is rated below normal, leaving just one watershed unrated, Lower Maumee River. Muskingum River basin is tripping back into drought, from the Wills Creek moderate drought, now extending to Little Muskingum and Hocking River watersheds, rated below normal. Ohio River minor tributary Little Beaver Creek is also rated below normal, as reported yesterday.
