Severe drought remains over the Hocking River watershed Hocking and Athens Counties in Central Ohio, the severe drought on adjacent Shade River watershed has downshifted to moderate drought. Little Muskingum River and Wheeling Creek watersheds have darkened from below normal to moderate drought as 7-day average streamflows continue at record low levels. In the Lake Erie basin, area rated below normal has shifted overnight. Lower Maumee River and Blanchard River watersheds are no longer rated at all, while Tiffin River and Huron-Vermilion River watersheds pick up the below normal status. Sandusky River watershed is still rated below normal as reported earlier this week.

WT HAB Tracker
from the satellite monitoring program of the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science(NCCOS) and State sources where available

A program for the advanced detection and monitoring of HABs in the USA is a collaborative effort by a number of national entities including NOAA, NASA, CDC and others. The focused effort of these agencies has accelerated the development of technologies for sensing and monitoring the harmful blooms, leading to better understanding of their growth, movement and potential toxicity. With careful monitoring and knowledge transfer to and from the local experts, negative health effects can be minimized for wildlife and human populations. According to the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science forecasting program information on line, "We have now reached a point in several regions where the understanding of these blooms is mature enough to put into place the detection and monitoring tools, and to bring these systems into an operational capacity." The benefits of these efforts to study and comprehend the impact and risk of cyanotoxins leads to better drinking water treatment and increased safety in consumption of fish and shellfish and in the enjoyment of recreational water bodies and beaches.

Lake Erie west basin
Lake Erie is the drinking water source for 12.5 million people in the US and Canada. The shallow basin, warmer temperatures, plentiful supply of nutrients supporting a large cyanobacteria bloom annually. As such, Lake Erie has been a priority, included in the satellite HAB monitoring program of the NOAA-NCCOS. The latest picture of west basin Lake Erie was captured August 29 at wind speed 6.9 mph. This image is mostly cloud obscured, HAB is visible between clouds at the west Ohio shoreline from Reno Beach to Port Clinton. Maumee Bay is completely cloud obscured in this image, as are Catawba Island, Kelleys, South Bass Middle Bass and open water of the west basin. A partial view of Sandusky Bay shows the Aphanizomenon HAB in dispersed mats both west and east of OH-269. A prior image captured Aug 26 shows Maumee Bay at Toledo and Maumee Bay State Park with extreme high concentration 2 to 4 million cells. See the Lake Erie HAB here.
