Madison Lake Recreational Public Health Advisory

June 4, 2024 updated 326 pm EDT

Current Streamflows from the network of USGS river monitors in Ohio
Below normal flows are creeping up into the interior, taking over the normal ratings from the south border Ohio River Tuesday. The lower provisional streamflow values are showing up in the lower Great Miami basin, lower Scioto and Muskingum River basins and throughout the Ohio River minor tributaries. Three watersheds in this area stick on the drought map at the below normal rating for another day. A cluster of below normal streamflow measurements recording in the northeast has pitched Grand River watershed into moderate drought depth overnight. The 7-day average streamflow measurements correlate to drought ratings from below normal, moderate drought, severe drought to extreme hydrologic drought, according to how low the 7-day average below seasonal normal and for how long. Dry conditions contribute to stress on raw drinking water sources, recreational water bodies and the aquatic habitats. More to follow as we track Ohio flows, HABs, hazardous spills and drinking water advisories by watershed area.

At the time of this report, there are no active floodings recorded in Ohio, no extreme high or extreme low flows.

HABs Tracker
from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science satellite monitoring program, Ohio Department of Health, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency

Several Lake Erie beaches have been cleared of Recreational Public Health Advisories for high bacterial contamination overnight and four new Lake Erie beaches have been posted with high bacterial counts today. Ten active advisories remain in effect including three algal toxin alerts for Grand Lake beaches, five Lake Erie beaches are under advisory, including Cedar Point Chaussee in Erie County, Lakeview Beach in Lorain County, Bay Park Beach and Clifton Beach in Cuyahoga County. A new advisory was issued yesterday for Madison Lake in Madison County comes with a bacteria count of 1040 cfu per 100 ml, more than four times the threshold level for recreational water safety. East Fork Main Beach in Clermont County remains on the advisory list with a level 480 cfu per 100 ml based on the May 28 sample.

NCCOS uploads new satellite photos of Lake Erie west basin on a near-daily basis. The latest image was captured June 3 at a surface wind speed 5.8 mph. This image offers a clear view to the open water in most of Sandusky Bay and the first 3 to 5 nm off shore from Marblehead to Kellys Island and all the way to the west shore north Maumee Bay. The north half of Lake Erie is cloud obscured. Moderate concentration HAB activity is visible on the east side of Catawba Island with a small open water bloom appearing in the center of the inner Sandusky Bay area. The last time and place we saw HAB in Lake Erie was May 31 image showing HABs in around Johnsons Island in the outer Sandusky Bay area, cloud obscured in the June 3rd image. For details, see the report here.

Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by National Weather Service in Cleveland 415 am Tuesday June 4, 2024
Lake Erie and northern Ohio Counties
There is a marginal risk (1 of 5) for severe weather Wednesday afternoon through late Wednesday evening. Damaging winds are the primary severe weather hazard. There is also a low risk for isolated flooding.

WT USA Flows and Flood Tracker provisional data from the network of USGS streamflow monitors

Fifty-five streamflow gauges indicate flow above flood stage in the USA Tuesday afternoon, up from fifty- two this morning. Louisiana is under a flash flood warning this afternoon with six monitoring stations reporting active flooding.

As northwest Louisiana remains under Flood Watch until tomorrow evening, rounds of thunderstorms and locally heavy rains have inundated the northwest giving rise to the flash flood warning issued 1130 am today. As of this update, Bayou Bodcau Lake has overrun the basin near Shreveport again, flood stage breached around noon on a rapid rising flow trend. The same five stations reported flooding this morning and three non-rated sites indicating extreme high flows are unchanged at this time. Bayou Dorcheat continues flooding near Springhill in watershed Region 1. Watershed Region 4 Sabine River is flooding near Logansport and Ruliff, TX. Calcasieu River is flooding near Glenmora and downstream near Oberlin. See black tags indicating flood flow volume and gauge height, blue tags for 99th percentile flows updated daily here.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
