HAPPENING NOW
Much above normal flows in the west
Moderate drought on Little Muskingum River watershed

Water news for Tuesday, April 30, 2024 1221 pm EDT

The current streamflow picture presents much above normal flows for west Ohio on both sides of the divide Tuesday. In the Lake Erie basin, the much above normal flows are recorded throughout the west. Northeast area is below normal with one station on the Cuyahoga River recorded much below normal at Newburgh Heights. In the Ohio/Mississippi basin, the higher streamflows are recorded through the Great Miami River drainage basin, shifting to below normal and much below normal through the Scioto and Muskingum basins. No active flooding is recorded as of this report, no extreme high or low flows.

WT USA Flows and Flood Tracker provisional data from the network of USGS streamflow monitors
Ninety streamflow gauges record flooding in the USA Tuesday, down from nintey-three on Sunday. WT tracks the nation's most common natural disaster dynamics through the states of New York, Ohio, Georgia and Louisiana. As of this report we are report in on 5 active floods, all in Louisiana.

New Orleans is under dense fog advisory this morning with more flooding and high flows popping up in the west since our last report. Sabine River has breached the channel upstream of the ongoing flooding near Ruliff, TX in watershed Region 4. Flooding resumed near Bon Wier, TX around 8 pm last evening, currently running a foot over. Also in Region 4, Calcasieu River is up overnight near Glenmora, presently running eleven inches over and rising. Bayou Anococo continues to flood near Rosepine, down from peak flow on a level trend. Bundick Creek peaked in 99th percentile flow yesterday, levelling off inches short of flood stage near DeRidder. North in Region 1 Bayou Bodcau is remains on a gradual declining flow trend near Shreveport, currently running eight and a half feet over flood stage. Bayou San Patricio runs 99th percentile near Benson.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
