HAZARDOUS SPILLS

EPA recently announced the release of the 2022 Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) National Analysis with positive news.

Toxic chemical releases have declined 21% in 10 years according to new TRI data.
From the announcement received March 21, 2024, "environmental releases of TRI chemicals from facilities covered by the program were 21% lower in 2022 compared to 2013. This includes a 26% decrease in air releases. During this 10-year period, releases from manufacturing facilities decreased by 9% while the value added to the U.S. economy from manufacturing increased by 14%. While overall releases increased by 1% from 2021 to 2022, there was a 6.5% increase in the number of pollution prevention activities reported under the TRI Program compared to 2021."

The most recent spill file found was one reported to Ohio EPA Spill line on April 11 .

Eight spills were recorded on this day and five spills are impacting water. 10 orphan containers reported on Kline Ave in Akron. Unknown amount of contaminated water reported spilled off Upper Valley Rd in German Township - unnamed waterbody impacted. Unknown amount of petroleum oil reported spilled on Township Hwy 803 in Flushing Township - unnamed waterbody impacted. Unknown amount of brine oil reported spilled on Hill Church St in Osnaburg Township - unnamed waterbody impacted. Unknown amount of blue material reported spilled on Hwy 2 in Willoughby - Chagrin River impacted. 70 gallons of diesel reported spilled on Hwy 23 in Salem Township - unnamed waterbody.

Spills, fish kills, rainbow sheen and releases of contaminants in the state of Ohio as reported to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Environmental Response. Users of this data should be aware that inconsistencies and inaccuracies may exist if these data are compared to data from other time periods due to changes in methods of data collection and mapping.
WTOH reports spills from OEPA with the following features: 
  • 40 gallons or more of petroleum product
  • toxic chemical materials, corrosives spills of any amount
  • all spills impacting water
Spills marked with asterisk are followed up with Ohio EPA authorities for additional information on the clean-up and recovery, including notices of violation and charges under State environmental statutes, federal charges under the Clean Water Act.
