Water news for Tueday, March 19, 2024 updated 222 pm EDT

Streamflow Situation provisional data supplied by USGS
A mix of normal to below normal streamflows are lighting up the dashboard Tuesday. No active flooding is recorded in the network, no extreme high or low flows.

As Ohio drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water bodies including lakes, rivers and reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the raw source water, requiring additional treatment to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to shallower conditons and warmer temperatures in surface water bodies, which can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present.

WTOH.us tracks current streamflow conditions with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in 32 watersheds of the state's 5 drainage basins. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the high and low streamflows that may be impacting drinking water water in Ohio today.

Flooding in the USA provisional data from USGS streamflow monitors

Twenty-seven stream gauges record flood stage in continental USA today, down from thirty-one this time yesterday.

WT tracks flooding and drinking water quality in four states. As of this report, no flooding is reported in the networks in New York or Ohio.

Louisiana picked up a fifth stream gauge reporting over flood stage, this being downstream of where Bayou Dorcheat has been flooding since March 8. Following heavy rains through southern Arkansas and northwest Louisiana last week, Bayou Dorcheat took on a lot of runoff, peaking more than seven feet above flood stage on March 17 around 145 am near Springhill. The surge of runoff passed through the channel fairly quickly, finding Minden twenty four hours later. Bayou Dorcheat began rising rapidly in the early morning hours of March 18, breaching flood stage there around 10 am. As of this report, Bayou Dorcheat is about halfway back down from its peak flow near Springhill and dropping, the flow near Minden is rising, beginning to slow the rate of rise, possibly looking to peak soon.

Bayou Bodcau continues to flood the area to the west of Bayou Dorcheat, running four feet over near Shreveport and rising. Flooding here had come within a foot of ending prior to the March 17 and 18 rain event. Pearl River is still flooding in watershed region 7 near Bogalusa, still flooding according to the Pearl River monitor downstream. along the east state line.

Georgia dropped one flood monitor overnight, today down to ten reports of flooding in the network. The current flood event in GA began on March 6 caused by heavy rain through north and central Georgia. Major rivers still flooding Monday include the Ocmulgee, Altamaha, Satilla, Savannah, Ogeechee and, Ohoopee Rivers, all heading for the Atlantic Ocean. Refer to black tags on the maps for updated flood flow levels, blue tags for 99th percentile high flows.

Harmful Algal Blooms - Lake Erie HAB from National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) satellite monitoring program
The latest image from NCCOS was captured March 18 at a surface wind speed 21.6 mph. The image is completely cloud obscured. The previous image, March 17 is partially cloud obscured, wind speed 15.1 mph.

Open water HAB can be seen 3-4nm from Cedar Point National Wildlife Refuge, localized HABs appear along shore at Magee Marsh and Metzger Marsh wildlife areas, in Portage River upstream of the outlet at Port Clinton, and along the shoreline between Vermilion River and Huron River outlets. All HABs have the appearance of moderate concentration 100 thousand cells per 100 ml.

Hazardous Spills
Spills in Ohio are reported to the 24 hour emergency spill hotline with response handled by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency 24/7 at 1-800-282-9378 or 614-224-0946.
