Moderate drought expands in Lake Erie basin
Great Miami River much above normal flows

Water news for Thursday, March 7, 2024 851 am EST


Streamflow Situation from USGS current streamflow monitors
Above normal to much above seasonal normal streamflows showing up Thursday morning on Lower Great Miami River at Hamilton and three tributaries. Normal to above normal streamflows registering in the Upper Great Miami.

Much below normal flows dominate in the northwest, sending Tiffin River and Auglaize River watersheds into moderated drought rating. No extreme high or low flows occurring as of this report.

Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow against seasonal average
Moderate hydrologic drought has expanded in the west Lake Erie drainage basin Thursday impacting the Tiffin River and Auglaize River watersheds. Cedar-Portage watershed has been cleared off the drought map, a return to normal streamflows has likewise lifted Black-Rocky, Grand River and Ashtabula-Chagrin watersheds off the drought map. Huron-Vermilion River watershed is stepped down from moderate drought to below normal rating Thursday.

South of the divide, Ohio River minor tributaries Raccoon-Symmes watershed shows up rated below normal, this is the only area of the Mississippi-bound flow rated on the drought map as of Thursday.

National Weather Service Hazardous Weather Outlook issued 542 am March 7

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for north central Ohio, northeast Ohio and northwest Ohio. Strong westerly winds may gust as high as 40 mph behind a strong cold front Saturday afternoon and night. Strong wind gusts may linger into Sunday downwind of Lake Erie.

NWA Hazardous Weather Advisory impacting Lucas-Wood-Ottawa-Sandusky-Erie-Lorain-Cuyahoga-Lake-Geauga-Hancock-Seneca-Huron-Medina-Summit-Portage-Trumbull-Wyandot-Crawford-Richland-Ashland-Wayne-Stark-Mahoning-Marion-Morrow-Holmes-Knox Counties.
